Farmstead Scattering Garden offers a mail-in human ash scattering service in a vibrant wildflower patch. This option is ideal for those who wish to celebrate a loved one’s life with a farewell surrounded by color, fragrance, and the beauty of blossoms swaying in the breeze. Because wildflowers are seasonal, some patches bloom only for a few weeks in the summer, while others stretch across longer periods. Ashes are scattered year-round, whether the flowers are in bloom or not, so each person becomes part of the land’s ongoing cycle of renewal.

Wildflowers symbolize resilience, diversity, and natural beauty. Choosing this setting allows your loved one’s memory to rest among blooms that return each year, reflecting a legacy that endures and grows. Whether you are pre-planning for yourself or arranging a meaningful tribute for someone dear, a wildflower patch offers a heartfelt and uplifting final resting place.

You may personalize the scattering by selecting the season, time of day, or a meaningful date. Optional weather elements and add-on experiences allow you to shape the ceremony with additional intention and care.

There is an extra fee for high-traffic days (e.g., Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.).

To stay connected with your loved one into the future, you are welcome to visit the Farmstead Scattering Garden Facebook page, where we share photos and videos of the farm, its flowers, and the changing beauty of each season.

How It Works

We’ve designed the process to be simple and supportive. After checkout, you’ll receive mailing instructions via email. Once the cremated remains arrive, we scatter them in the wildflower patch following your customizations. If you would like, the urn may also be returned to you.

All ceremonies are guided by safety and practicality, meaning not every weather or experience combination will be possible. Farmstead Scattering also provides flexible pre-planning, with arrangements made up to five years in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Why didn’t I see the personalization questions when checking out?

If you check out using the Shop app or Shop Pay, some of our personalization questions may not appear. The Shop checkout does not currently support all of the custom fields we use to gather details about your loved one and your preferences for the scattering. After your order is received, our team will reach out to collect the necessary information to ensure the scattering is handled with care and in accordance with your wishes.

Can family members attend the scattering?

We're unable to offer in-person scatterings or visits. Farmstead Scattering Garden is part of our working family cattle farm, and safety is our top priority. Farms can be unpredictable places — with tractors moving, hay to be baled, and animals needing attention, sometimes at a moment’s notice.

There have been countless times when family dinners or planned events were delayed or rescheduled because the land required our attention — a calf being born, a storm rolling in during hay season, or other time-sensitive needs. Because of this, we cannot consistently guarantee that a scheduled in-person scattering would go as planned, and we prefer not to risk disappointment during such an important moment.

For these reasons, all scatterings are mail-in only. You will receive photos and a map of the scattering site, and you can stay connected through our Facebook page for updates on the land and animals throughout the seasons.

What happens to the urn after scattering?

If you select the urn return option, the urn will be carefully packaged and mailed back to the return address you provide. You may also choose to donate the urn or indicate that no urn is included with your shipment.

Are ashes safe for woodland soil and plants?

Cremated remains have a unique chemical composition that requires thoughtful placement. Farmstead Scattering carefully manages the weight and location of each scattering to support a healthy soil ecosystem and protect surrounding plant life, including the ferns in this woodland setting.

Can I choose the season or timing of the scattering?

Yes. Farmstead Scattering offers flexible scheduling, including pre-planning options up to five years in advance. You may select general timing, season, or enhanced timing options when placing your order. All requests are honored within practical and safety guidelines.

How does mail-in ash scattering work?

After checkout, you will receive detailed mailing instructions by email. You send the cremated remains to Farmstead Scattering Garden using the provided guidance. Once received, the ashes are respectfully scattered in the Bed of Ferns according to your selected timing and preferences. You will be notified once the scattering has been completed.
