How To Plan An Ash Scattering Experience at Farmstead Scattering Garden?

Planning an ash scattering experience through the Farmstead Scattering Garden is straightforward and customizable. You can plan for cremated remains of your estate prior to your death or for a loved one that has entrusted you with their legacy.

Here’s how to organize your ceremony:

1. Visit the Website and Select Services

Start by visiting Farmstead Scattering Garden. Choose between options for human or pet ash scattering services. Ashes will be scattered within seven days of receipt unless additional timing or experiences are requested.

One question often asked is if we can take just a portion of the ashes and the answer is yes. You can mail any amount up to 10 lbs of cremated remains per order. You can mail it in an urn or you can mail a portion of it in an enclosed bag.

2. Customize the Experience

  • Location: Select from several scenic spots on the working farm, such as a hayfield, cattle pasture, horse pasture, wildflower patch, or ferns. Each purchase comes with a choice of location for free.
  • Timing: Specify your preferred time of day (sunrise, sunset, or any time) and season (spring, summer, fall, winter, or a specific date). High usage date options such as December 25th or the fourth Thursday in November incur an additional fee of $100.
  • Weather Conditions: Request specific weather scenarios, including a cloudless sky, snowy ground, rain, or even a day with a rainbow.
  • Enhanced Experiences: Add unique elements like scattering ashes from a tractor during fieldwork, horseback rides, or with a special song, written passage, or video documentation. You can even determine whether your experience is delivered with a red or green tractor---which, in farming, can be exceptionally important detail!
  • Provide Details: Input information about the deceased, contact details, and any unique identifiers (like a crematory tag number). You can upload supporting materials like songs or written tributes.
  • Mail the Ashes: Package and send the ashes following the guidelines of the United States Postal Service. The USPS is the only legal way to ship cremated remains.

3. Follow-Up and Updates

While the farm does not host in-person visits, you can stay connected through their Facebook page or email for updates on the scattering process and farm activities.

The Facebook page is updated with photos of the farm several times a week. The service ensures flexibility while maintaining respect and care throughout the process. You can find more details directly on their services page. If you have a different idea in mind for an ash scattering experience, please email farmstead.scattering.garden@gmail.com and describe your desired experience. We will work with you to try to make the experience possible.
