I lost my sister way before her time and my mother, and I wanted a special place for her ashes. Farmstead was perfect!! They took their time and made sure that my sister was surrounded by beauty. We could not be more grateful for the peace they provided. They made what seemed impossible for us to be able to do for her possible. What a lovely place and lovely staff!!

I think most of us hope we’ll never have to make the decision about what to do with a loved one’s ashes. Sadly, I knew that choice would one day fall to me—but I never expected just how much red tape and regulation would come with it.
When my parents realized they were nearing the end of their journey—ready to “cross the finish line,” as they would say—they were very clear about their wishes: no fancy urns, no displays, no memorial jewelry, and I was not to hold on to their cremains for long. My mom passed on 8/19/22 and my dad followed on 7/23/24. For months, I searched for a place to scatter their ashes that would meet their wishes and also give me peace. I checked places in Kentucky, Maryland, Indiana, Tennessee—even where they had lived or loved. But many required permits, strict rules, or even fees up to $1000 per person. I felt stuck, frustrated, and honestly, pretty heartbroken.
Then I found Farmstead Scattering Garden.
I spent days researching them, looking through every photo on their Facebook page. The moment I saw the land, a sense of calm washed over me. I reached out to Amy, who was so warm and easy to talk to. I asked questions, chose a package that felt right (and one I knew my parents wouldn’t give me grief about in the afterlife!), and followed the instructions to get the special shipping box from the USPS website. Ironically, it took longer for that box to arrive than it did for me to send my parents to their final resting place.
Once the ashes arrived, Amy let me know right away. She offered to hold them until the date I chose—yes, you can even select the date, time, type of weather, and even background music. In a perfect world, I’d have had their family gathered for a game of Phase 10, hopping on horseback, and sending my parents off to “Wind Beneath My Wings.” You can get that specific with this incredible family. But true to my parents’ simple wishes, I kept it minimal and meaningful.
Today, Amy reached out with photo confirmation that my parents’ ashes were spread exactly where I requested—in the woods, overlooking the creek. It was beautiful, serene, and just… right.
This isn’t just a business. This is a functioning farm with horses, cattle, and breathtaking scenery. It’s a family offering up a part of their land so others can say goodbye in a way that truly honors their loved ones. Their prices are fair, their compassion is genuine, and the peace I feel knowing my parents are resting there? Absolutely priceless.
If you’re overwhelmed, heartbroken, and don’t know what to do next—please, reach out to Farmstead Scattering Garden. I am so deeply grateful that I did.-V.C.
